Exciting News from Arleigh K Yoga

Starting this week I'll be changing up my schedule and on 10/15 you will have two great ways to practice with me.  I'll still be teaching at Yoga Moves, 335 Main Street, Stoneham, MA but my class schedule will be as follows:

Wednesday, 7:30pm - Slow Flow and Restore - The perfect class for a mid week detox! This slow flow class balances strength, flexibility, focus and alignment. Class will end with a series of postures to restore your body to a deep sense of relaxation.  This class is NOT HOT

Sunday, 8:30 am - Non-heated Flow (starting 10/15) - This class is designed for all levels of yoga students. Practiced in a regular temperature room we'll focus on building heat from within. Similar to Yoga Moves - Hot with out the hot room. Balancing strength and flexibility; cardio and resistance. This class is great for those who don't want the heat or those who Love the heat but want something a little different.

I'm really excited about these two classes!  Hoping you can join me on your mat soon!

Arleigh

Yoga for a cause this Saturday at Yoga Moves

I'll be teaching a benefit class this Saturday, March 11th at Yoga Moves, Main Street, Stoneham, MA.  I am helping out two lovely ladies who are running the Chicago Marathon for St. Jude's Hospital.

Brittany and Sam are running the Chicago Marathon this coming October. They are not just running for themselves but they are running to help save kids’ lives by fundraising for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as they both train. Brittany lost her father to cancer four years ago. Growing up, he would drive hours to watch her run a three mile race. She knows what it’s like to lose a parent to cancer but can only imagine the heartbreak parents go through as their watch their children fight for their lives. Together, Brittany and Sam are fundraising for kids who might be too sick to run today, but who could one day be running alongside us because the money we raised helped find a cure for childhood cancer. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food -- because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80% since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude won't stop until no child dies from cancer.

You can sign up for the class in advance to save your spot at the below link:

It's all about determination....

When I started out on my journey to become a yoga teacher I had no idea where it would lead me.  I often said - I probably won't teach.  Wow - was I wrong!  It was an amazing six month journey to where I am now - teaching a regular class every Friday!  I couldn't have done it without these amazing women!  If you are interested at all in taking a teacher training - I say go for it!  It was a total worthwhile adventure!   And look - Yoga Moves is already getting their class together for 2017  - http://www.eyogamoves.com/teacher-training.html

So I thought this was going to be easy??!!

Just wrapped up my second weekend of teacher training and I have to say it's much much more than I thought.  It's overwhelming but exciting.

The first weekend focused on the history of yoga and the eight limbs.   There is so much more to yoga than exercise or a pose. So much that I didn't know. It isn't just something you do for an hour a day - it's truly a way of life. It is based on thousands of years is teachings, passed down, adapted and influenced by many amazing yogis. Honestly made my head spin with all of the information. I feel like it would be disrespectful to all who have practiced, grown and developed the teachings of yoga, to not use this history, to be the very best teacher I can be.  I've read only a small part of the works of the most respected teachers who developed the styles of yoga that shape what we teach today, and I am humbled. I can't wait to share it with students! Lots to take in for a weekend!

Then the ongoing homework happened - 100 classes between now and January - try new studios - try new teachers - try new styles of yoga - learn the sequence. Along the way, improve my practice. Hopefully get some great feed back from some amazing teachers.  Figure out what works for me and recognize that it might not be the same for everyone. Even if in the process I find styles I don't enjoy as much, respect what they are and what they offer.

This weekend was the second weekend and if my head wasn't spinning enough, this was all about anatomy. It was not only learning the different muscle groups it is learning how they work together and what poses strengthen and what poses stretch. I learned a whole new respect for connective tissue and fascia and realizing even more that Yin Yoga has a place in my practice. Lots of reading, lots of memorizing and much more analyzing so I can understand how you build a sequence utilizing different muscle groups. We were lucky enough to have an amazing teacher who some how made the science of it all seem fun. I feel like I have only touched the tip of the iceberg!

I feel like I can't fit another piece of knowledge in my brain - and we're at weekend two!  But I've got six other amazing women to support me along the way and I'm determined!  I am so glad to be doing this!  I can't imagine a studio that could offer a better training than Mary Ellen and her amazing team of teachers at Yoga Mves! Keep checking back and I'll keep sharing my journey.

Yoga Is for EVERYONE!!!

It's always bothered me that when I say I practice yoga the most common response is "Oh, I can't do that".  I am not sure what it is that makes people think that they cannot do yoga.  It's not all about doing a handstand or getting your leg behind your head.  They call it a practice because it is so different for everyone!  It's about finding the space in you that is where you need to be.  Thats what I love about yoga - everyone can get something from it! You don't have to be a size 2 or wear really expensive yoga clothes, you just have to make the commitment to make it to the mat and listen to what your body can do.  The possibilities are truly endless!
